SUMMARY:Storytelling: A Mid-Winter’s Night Dream at Dennis Public Library
DESCRIPTION:What a better way to celebrate the coming Groundhog Day than with a FREE performance of A Mid-Winter’s Night Dream Saturday\, January 31st\, 12-1:30pm at the Dennis Public Library? \nIn this wintry fantasy\, is it a groundhog or Jackson Gillman who leaves his den to go on a snowy walkabout\, tracks an otter\, goes airborne after an exhilarating slide\, plunges into icy water\, somehow survives hypothermia and dances under the Northern Lights with an angel? Jackson swears that much of these winter adventures are true life. This warm-hearted story will surely be a wild ride and intriguing fun trying to divine fact from fiction. \nThe fanciful escapade is generally performed for adults\, but families and school-age children can easily follow and enjoy the story and songs as well. \nThis performance is offered in partnership with the Dennis Conservation Land Trust (DCLT) and is partially funded by the Dennis Arts and Culture Council\, a local agency for the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency. \nMore info here. \n

SUMMARY:Pond Ecology Matters: Biodiversity and Its Role in Pond Health
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Association to Preserve Cape Cod’s Koppel Center for a talk by our very own Dave Fryxell on how Pond Ecology Matters: Biodiversity and Its Role in Pond Health. \nCape Cod’s ponds are more than scenic features—they are vibrant ecosystems that support an extraordinary diversity of life and provide services essential to our communities. While growing concerns about pollution and declining water quality are rightly receiving attention\, an equally important and often overlooked piece of the puzzle is biodiversity itself. \nIn this talk\, Dave will explore how the plants\, animals\, and microscopic life within ponds shape their health\, resilience\, and function. Drawing on classic studies and compelling real-world\, local examples\, he will share stories that reveal how ponds both support and depend on the rich web of life they contain. \nAttendees will come away with a deeper appreciation for the hidden dynamics of pond ecosystems and why biodiversity is central to the services they provide. \nRSVP here.\n \nSpeaker: Dave Fryxell is the executive director of the Dennis Conservation Land Trust and a research scientist with the University of Connecticut’s Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He earned a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, where he studied in the Freshwater and Coastal Ecology lab group\, and later completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Auckland’s School of Environment. Dave’s research and teaching have focused on freshwater ecology\, with a particular interest in how biodiversity shapes and is shaped by freshwater ecosystems.

SUMMARY:Tick Talk & Walk at Not Enough Acres Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join us May 7th\, from 5:30pm-7pm for a Tick Talk & Walk at the Dennis Conservation Land Trust’s Not Enough Acres Farm. \nWe’ll be in safe hands with Escher Cattle\, an entomologist and extension educator for Barnstable County’s Cape Cod Cooperative Extension. Escher will take us tick sampling and flagging in a meadow on our property as an exercise. \nThe last thing you want to know is that we’ll have a good variety of ticks out and about as peak season is ramping up but good to know how we can spot and repel (as much as humanly possible) different ticks! \nEscher received his Bachelor of Science in Insect Ecology & Conservation from University of Delaware in 2018\, and his Master of Science in Entomology from North Carolina State University in 2025. SUMMARY:Artist + Natural Plant Dyer Natalie Stopka Book Signing & Demo
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 13th\, 2pm-4pm and step into a world where art\, science\, and nature converge at the Dennis Conservation Land Trust and celebrate the launch of the book From Plant to Pigment with author and textile artist Natalie Stopka. \n \nNatalie will kick off her talk with a demo making invasive buckthorn into a usable pigment + a book talk and signing that will make you rethink where color comes from while also shining a light on the vital role of water and plants in conservation. \nIn addition to the demo and talk\, Natalie will introduce us to her traveling archive of over 200 hand-crafted plant pigments from sources you won’t believe! Each hue tells a story of transformation: from wild-foraged plants to radiant inks\, paints\, and pastels\, and reveals the delicate balance between natural materials and the environments they come from. \n \nThis event places a special focus on water quality and ecological stewardship.\nLearn how something as seemingly simple as water is essential not only for vibrant\, lasting pigments\, but for the health of the ecosystems that produce them. \nYou’ll also discover how plants themselves play a powerful role in conservation. From filtering and protecting waterways to serving as renewable sources of color\, botanical materials offer a path toward more sustainable creative practices. Through stories of traditional pigment-making and modern experimentation\, Natalie connects the dots between art\, environmental awareness\, and responsible sourcing. \n \nNatalie will be selling and signing copies of From Plant to Pigment at the event! \nRSVP here!
