Seth writes:
“Stepping back in time.”
That’s how Dave Fryxell, executive director of the Dennis Conservation Land Trust, describes visiting land, homestead, and outbuildings on the town’s northside, the heart of the Crowell family’s historic “Sesuet Farm” (with that spelling), now owned and protected by the Trust.
Few if any places on Cape Cod accomplish that feat better.
Walking open rolling land that has been farmed for centuries, wandering through a homestead built around 1840 and inhabited by the same family until this year, stepping into musty darkness of sheds and garage packed with everything from vintage tools to antique license plates, it’s easy to feel that the protection and respect shown this incarnation was inevitable, meant to be.
But of course that is not true, as much of Cape Cod can attest.
When the Land Trust was informed by Seth Crowell and his family in late March that a sale was imminent, with the Trust invited to bid, there was a proviso:
“They wanted to close in 30 days,” remembers Fryxell. Otherwise, it would go on the open market…”
