Tobey Woodlands Preserved!

Dennis Conservation Land Trust announces the purchase of the 14-acre Tobey Woodlands with the title transferred today.

Dennis, MA  – January 15, 2020 – The Dennis Conservation Land Trust (DCLT) is pleased to announce the preservation of 14 acres in Dennis Village, a parcel referred to as “Tobey Woodlands.” The Trust has worked diligently for years to ensure that this historic and ecologically significant property on Old King’s Highway, part of an original colonial grant of land to the Tobey Family, is protected for generations to come.

Joseph Masse, DCLT President said, “We are thrilled to have conserved this historic landscape. We so appreciate the hard work of Katherine Garofoli, our former Executive Director, and contributions from our state and local partners, foundations, trustees, members, and friends. We couldn’t be more pleased with the community support we have received!”

The DCLT purchased Tobey Woodlands for $800,000, with significant funding from the Town of Dennis’ Community Preservation Fund ($400,000). The DCLT raised the balance, combining an $85,000 Massachusetts Conservation Partnership Grant and grants from the Fields Pond Foundation and Cape Cod Five Bank, along with contributions from the DCLT Trustees, members, and from citizens, which totaled nearly $300,000. The DCLT purchased the land from brothers Charles Winters and Tobey Winters, who offered a discounted price for conservation.

The property comprises seven acres of salt marsh at the head of the Chase Garden Creek estuary, and almost seven acres of pine-oak forest, meadow, and maritime thicket upland habitat. Protecting Tobey Woodlands from development offers opportunities for passive recreation, and prevents the loss of wildlife habitat – it is home to deer, coyotes, fisher, fox, migratory birds, and raptors – and enhances the quality of life of Dennis by providing an open space area for residents and visitors to enjoy. The DCLT intends to open the property for trail use later in the year.

Tobey Farm, of which these 14 acres were a part, dates to 1670 and has been in the extended family ever since, some of whom still manage the farm stand.

More about the DCLT – Founded in 1988, the Dennis Conservation Land Trust (DCLT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving open space within the Town of Dennis, Massachusetts. The DCLT has worked with over 75 families, the Town of Dennis, and several community partners to realize the benefits of placing land in conservation. Since 1988, the DCLT has acquired ownership of 394 acres of diverse land types, including uplands, wetlands and beachfront, and holds perpetual conservation restrictions on another 217 acres.

TERRACORPS and DCLT PARTNER ON NEW POSITION!

Apply now for this 11-month exciting position and make a difference with on important conservation projects!  Position begins August 2022.

TerraCorps is an AmeriCorps affiliated start-up environmental non-profit preparing and mobilizing emerging leaders to help communities gain access to and conserve land for people and nature. Working at the intersection of the land conservation and urban agriculture movements, our vision is to create a future where land is the foundation of health and well-being for ALL people in EVERY community.

This year’s TerraCorps program will support up to 60 full-time AmeriCorps Members across Massachusetts and Rhode Island each serving in one of five positions: Land Stewardship Coordinator (LSC), Land Conservation Coordinator (LCC), Community Engagement Coordinator (CEC), Youth Education Coordinator (YEC), or Sustainable Agriculture Coordinator (SAC). Members will serve in full- time, 11-month terms (August 29th, 2022-July 28, 2023) in which they complete at least 1,700 hours of service with one of our partner organizations. Members receive a living allowance, education award, and additional AmeriCorps benefits (see full list at end of announcement).

The Dennis Conservation Land Trust will host a Land Stewardship Coordinator for the 2022-2023 service year. Information about all TerraCorps positions is available at ttps://terracorps.org/.

Land Stewardship Coordinator with the Dennis Conservation Land Trust for a great position?

Land Stewardship Coordinators (LSC) Build the long-term capacity of their Service Sites by creating networks of volunteers to support hands-on stewardship of community lands. They organize, train, and collaborate with municipal boards, neighborhood and civic associations, community members, youth groups, and schools to care for, improve access to, a1nd support the long-term resiliency and sustainable use of community lands. By providing training and organizing collaborative land-focused projects, they increase resources for community projects, demonstrate environmentally responsible land management, help individuals build skills, and nurture an inclusive sense of public ownership in the local landscape. LSCs generally spend roughly 60% of their time in the office and 40% in the field.

TerraCorps Members engage with their supervisors to develop and carry out three or more capacity building projects over the course of the service year. Some of these projects will involve recruiting, training, and/or managing community volunteers. DCLT has proposed the following potential project(s) for their Land Stewardship Coordinator:

  • training and overseeing our high school students, college interns and local volunteer stewards in caring for DCLT

lands and waters, and assisting in monitoring DCLT properties (plants, wildlife and water quality).

Development of these and other projects will occur during the first two months of service and consider the Member’s interests and skills.

Required AmeriCorps Qualifications

  • A US citizen, US national, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the S.
  • At least 18 years old
  • A minimum of a high school diploma or GED
  • No more than three previous terms as an AmeriCorps Member
  • Pass a criminal history background check, including an FBI check

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong writing (technical) and verbal communication skills
  • Able to serve both independently and as a member of a team
  • Comfort navigating computer software programs (Word, Excel, PowerPt, mapping software)
  • Training and experience pertinent to the Land Stewardship Coordinator position and projects listed above
  • Strong interest and background in natural sciences – ability to use field guides to identify plant and wildlife species
  • Experience training and educating community members and volunteers
  • Outgoing, positive, can-do attitude, team-player

AmeriCorps Member Eligibility Requirements

 All Members are expected to serve full-time, commit to serve for the entire 11-month term, and complete at least 1,700 hours of service, including time spent in trainings and several service days with the full TerraCorps cohort. Weekly service averages 38 hours and commonly includes some night and/or weekend activities.

Member Compensation and Benefits

  • TerraCorps Members will receive a living allowance of up to $18,500 (pre-tax) over the 11- month term of service, which is $740 (pre-tax) per 25 biweekly pay periods.
